To go to Lhasa/Tibet you need a permit. To get a permit right now you need to join a guided tour
group. Below are some Lhasa & Tibet guided tours. Tours, prices & regulations will change from
time to time (usually more expensive in summer), but we always try to get a competitive price
from our agents in Lhasa. You can also find train and plane prices at the bottom of this page...
A note on “Tour Groups”… A tour group can be any number of people. A one-person tour group is also possible
but you must still travel with a guide. Bigger groups make the tour price cheaper for everyone. If you are
flexible in terms of which dates you would like to go and which tours you would like to do it will be easier to
find people to share the tour costs with you. If you stay at the hostel for around a week it may be enough time
to meet some other travelers. You can also let us know your details in advance and we can try to find people
to join your group. You can see a list of people looking for others to join their group at the bottom of this page.
A note the “Guide”… The guide may not always enter into tourist sites with you. Their job is sometimes just to
make sure you stay within the allowed areas.
To process your permits we need a copy of your main passport page (showing your photo, name, date of birth,
country, and passport number etc). We also need a copy of your China visa* page. You should also let us
know your occupation and which date you would like to travel on. The permit will be valid to board the
train/plane on that date, and also valid to board the train/plane on the day before and day after. For the most
chance of obtaining a ticket you should be prepared to leave on any of the 3 days.
*Notice to anyone about to apply for a China visa: Several sites on the internet advise not to write on the visa
application form that you would like to go to Tibet, as this may make the visa process longer.
We usually need 4 working days (Monday to Friday) to process Lhasa permits and tours. We can also process
permits and tours for people not staying at the hostel. If you do not have enough time to spend in Beijing, you
can also book permits and tickets in advance by sending money via Western Union. If you would like to book
permits and tickets in advance, you will need to scan and email separate copies of your passport & visa pages
to us (please send JPG/JPEG or BITMAP pictures - please do not send PDF or Word documents).
Foreigners living in China & foreign media workers: Sometimes F/Z visa holders may have problems obtaining
a permit so please apply with us as early as possible. If you are a foreign diplomat/official, embassy worker or
journalist you may have a problem applying for a normal TTB/TTP permit. Please consult your
employers/embassy first to avoid disappointment. If you are a teacher or student in China we will also need a
copy of your student/work book/card/ID.
